Most multi-time Chief HR Officers (CHROs) have learned this important lesson and probably the hard way: You have to meet the organization where it is, rather than where you want and hope it to be.

Assessing and understanding the current state of the HR function within the organization, including identifying any areas that may need improvement or changes.
Building strong relationships with key stakeholders, including senior leadership, managers, and employees, in order to effectively learn the business cold, to understand short-term and long-term capacities for “great HR”, and to populate the stakeholder map during future change initiatives.
Developing a clear strategy and action plan for addressing the organization's current and future HR needs, and ensuring alignment with overall business goals.
